What are your office hours?
The Building Department is open from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM-4:00 PM Monday through Friday.
What type of projects require a permit?
The installation of new patios, driveways, walkways, storage sheds, the replacement, repair, or construction of new fences and retaining walls, and play sets require a building permit. Changes in grade, interior and exterior remodels, additions to existing residences, and new residences also require a building permit. The permit must be approved prior to work commencing on the project.
The demolition of an existing residence or accessory building requires a demolition permit. Tree removal permits are required for any tree that is not considered dead, diseased or dying.
For a tree removal permit where less than 5 trees are requested for removal you must have the owner's signature, proof of trustee notification (where applicable) and all application documentation is required. There is a cost of $135 upon approval.
For tree removal permits where 5 or more trees, or 20% or more of the overall trees or any landmarks are being removed you must have all items listed above for submittal. New or replacement mechanical systems require an HVAC permit.
The modification of a plumbing, sewer, or drainage systems requires a plumbing permit.
Modifications to electrical systems or new installation require electrical permits from St. Louis County and must be performed by a licensed electrician. For more information contact the St. Louis County Department of Public Works at 615-5184.

How long does it take to review my permit application?
Review times vary based on the type of project. Typically a project can take two-three weeks for approval. New Residences will take longer, they require approval from the Architectural Review Board.
What type of projects do not require a permit?
Roof repair or exterior repair from minor storm damage does not require a permit. Replacement patios, driveways, or walkways that are the same dimension and location as previously installed do not require a permit.
Kitchen remodels which only involve the replacement of appliances and cabinets do not require a permit.

How do I schedule an inspection?
Inspection can be scheduled by contacting the Building Department at 314-997-6308 no later than 3:00 PM, 48 hours prior to the day you would like the inspection to occur. Inspections can be scheduled for AM or PM. Please provide your permit number, the type of inspection, and the day you would like the inspection to occur.
What times is construction noise allowed?
Construction noise is allowed Monday through Friday 7 AM to 6 PM and Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM. Any construction noise before or after the allowed time is considered a violation of the City’s noise ordinance.
